The Kingston Whig-Standard
Seven buildings and a garden built between 1998 and 2000 have won urban design awards for enhancing the visual appeal of Kingston. This week has been marked Architecture Week, and the city-run Livable City Design Awards recognize the owners, designers, builders and engineers behind the award-winning projects in six categories.
The winners of the Rose Richardson and Zal Yanosky Historic Preservation Award are:
-The Whig-Standard Building, owned by Kincore Holdings Ltd. and designed by architect Alexander Wilson. Its structural engineer was Zegers Engineering, its mechanical engineer was Atira Engineering and its general contractor was Acclaim Building Services. - Royal Artillery Park, owned by Greg Rosen and designed by Ernest Cromarty.
The winners of the renovation category are: - The Brock Street Common, owned by Kincore Holdings Ltd. and designed by Downey Architects. - Tara Natural Foods, owned by Jan MacLean and Rudi Mogl and designed by Inglis and Downey Architects.
The winning project in the commercial category is Tim Hortons at Princess and Clergy streets, owned by Jay and Toby Abramsky and designed by Alexander Wilson Architects. The structural engineers were Roney Engineering Ltd., mechanical and electrical engineering was done by Zagrodney Engineering and the general contractor was Wemp & Smith Ltd. The institutional category winner is Pittsburgh Public Library, owned by the City of Kingston.
The city-owned Portsmouth Village Gardens, designed by Anne Milina and the Portsmouth Villagers Association, won the non-building category. The StarTek building on Highway 15 won the industrial category. Owned by StarTek Canada Services Ltd., the building was designed by Brisbin, Brook & Beynon.
As part of Architecture Week, there will be a number of public events to showcase the richness and diversity of the city's architectural fabric: - Tomorrow - 7 p.m. A lecture by Katherine Stone, the host of Home and Garden Television's Lofty Ideas program, at Indigo Books & Music. - Friday - 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. An open house at the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce, 67 Brock St., featuring a 3 to 3:30 p.m. walking tour with Kim Donovan, president of Kincore Holdings.
- Saturday - 1:30 p.m. A guided tour of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre exhibit and at 2:30 p.m., a guided trolley tour of the award winning projects. To reserve, call 540-3712.
